Korean has ' Eol jjang' syndrome these days. 'Eol' is a short form of 'faces' and 'jjang' means 'the best' in Korean. 'Eol jjang' stands for someone who has very good look in Korean. This syndrome has been in fashion for years. As a result of it, people started to care of their appearance and also, they have the tendency which judge someone by his/her appearance. we call it, Lookism. That is so sad and stupid and it should be changed.
Then what are the problems with lookism? It makes people feel that they have to be beautiful. Because of this, people have plastic surgery. It would be right, for example, if someone got plastic surgery for one's self-satisfaction. She had a complex about her eyes so she could not make eye contact with anybody and after surgery she got confidence when she were talking with somebody. However, Korean today get plastic surgery for getting a job and getting a boyfriend or husband. Sad to say, it is becoming very common among not only women but also men.
In fact, lookism has really made very seriously problems. As I mentioned above, many people had plastic surgery and some of them are addicted to it. It is a kind of mental illness and they never satisfy with their appearance so they long to have surgery more and more. In addition, people want to be in fit for having good look. Some people work out for it but most people choose being on a diet. Here is something have to concern. If someone were on a diet very extremely, it could bring him/her anorexia or bulimia. These are also a sort of mental illness and these are common side effects of diet. For sure, they make him/her get sick not be seen beautiful or healthy. As a matter of fact, many people are suffering from these kinds of side effects.
It is time to consider this situation seriously and try to get out of it. Mass media could feel the responsibility about this because if they had been able to foster lookism, on the other hand, that means they would have power that can make things go in the right way. Furthermore the thing we could do is to try to pursuit inner beauty which is more beautiful and important. There is an old saying, it is telling us that do not judge a book by its cover.
